Pythéas of Marseille

There are few books accessible to the public. The majority are scientific publications that can only be consulted in specialized libraries, or works that are now out of print. Three books have been published recently. One in French, in 2000, is the first essay of this type on Pytheas in France. The second, in English, was published in 2001 (a French translation is now available). Finally, in 2008, a “survey” was published.

  • Pytheas's Logbook

Logbook of Pytheas, Marseille geographer of the 4th century BC, presented and commented by Fernand Lallemand. Novel Editions de Paris, 1956

  • PYTHEAS

A book that honors our famous Marseille navigator. In a simple style, the authors Hugues JOURNES, Yvon GEORGELIN and Jean Marie GASSEND tell us about Pytheas, first in Massalia, then they build the journey. The book could be sad, but it becomes luminous thanks to the superb watercolors of Jean Marie Gassend. Pytheas. Les Editions de la Nerthe. approximately 150 pages At Jeanne Laffitte in Marseille or Lavoisier or Fnac. ISBN: 2-913483-10-0

  • The extraordinary journey of Pytheas the Greek

Barry CUNLIFFE has concocted for us a new vision of the voyage of Pytheas. Using the same clues as in the previous book, the journey is different. Like a detective, the author takes us in pursuit of our dear navigator. There are few images. One regret: the book is in English. The Extraordinary Voyage of PYTHEAS the GREEK. Publisher: Walker & Company New York. Online at Amazon. ISBN 0-8027-1393-9 Since 2004, there has been a French translation: Pytheas the Greek discovers Northern Europe, 4th century BC. Editions: Autrement, (Collection Mémoire, n° 91).
